We are in the hurricane season of 2021. We just wanted to mention a few things you can do to help ensure the integrity of your roof. First, look for any overhanging tree branches that are close to your home. Also, look for any dead trees or branches that may need to be dealt with.
You should also check for any nail pops that will cause your shingle to be slightly elevated which can be caught by strong winds and gusts. A nail pop is when a nail works its way up from the decking of your roof, lifting the shingle above it. The cause of this is generally when your home shifts and moves, which is a normal occurrence, especially in relatively new homes. Homes settle as the soil they are built on packs more firmly through the years. To fix the nail pop, you need to slightly lift the shingle, remove the nail and place some caulk over the small hole then press the shingle back in place. If it doesn’t lay totally flat, eventually the heat will relax it back into place. Nail pops will cause a leak if they are not addressed.
Another thing to do is make sure your gutters are free of debris. If you have debris in your gutters blocking the flow of water, it can cause the water to backflow under your shingles, causing leaks and damage to your home. In hurricanes, you have strong winds and pouring rain that can cause problems if these minor things are not addressed when found.
